Senate Approves Rail Strike Deal Sending the Bill to President Biden’s Desk
NBC: The Senate passed legislation Thursday to avoid an economically catastrophic rail strike, one day after the House approved the measure. It now goes to President Joe Biden, who said he “will sign the bill into law” ( NBC). Sen. Tim Scott: President Biden kicked the can down the road in September when he claimed to have “reached a deal” to prevent the rail strike. We wouldn’t be facing this crisis if he had focused on the issue at hand instead of playing politics during an election season ( Twitter). Sen Ted Cruz: A rail strike could cost the American economy $2 billion a day. The results would be catastrophic. Unfortunately, what Biden and the Democrats have decided to do is squash the demands of railroad workers ( Twitter).

California Reparations Committee Recommends Doling Out $223,200 to Slave Descendants
Daily Mail: A reparations committee in California has suggested that descendants of slaves in the state could be compensated $223,200 each for ‘housing discrimination’. The nine-member Reparations Task Force was formed by California Governor Gavin Newsom as part of the country’s largest ever effort to address reparations for slavery. A focus of the California task force has been ‘housing discrimination’ – it has been estimated that it would cost around $569 billion to compensate the 2.5 million Black Californians for setbacks between 1933 and 1977. That is more than California’s $512.8 billion expenditure in 2021 – which included funding for schools, hospitals, universities, highways, policing and corrections. It has until June 2023 to submit its final recommendations to the Legislature ( Daily Mail). John Cardillo: California wasn’t a slave state. Let that sink in ( Twitter).

Biden’s Student Loan Program on Pause While Supreme Court Hears Legal Challenge
New York Times: The Supreme Court agreed on Thursday to decide whether the Biden administration had overstepped its authority with its plan to wipe out billions of dollars in student debt. The justices put the case on an unusually fast track, saying they would hear arguments in February. In the meantime, though, they left in place an injunction blocking the program ( New York Times). ABC News: The program, which would grant up to either $10,000 or $20,000 in federal debt relief to student borrowers who make under a certain income, depending on the kind of loan they used, has been blocked by lower courts since November ( ABC News). Forbes: 26 million. That’s the number of federal student loan borrowers who had applied for student loan forgiveness before applications for the program were suspended on November 11, according to the Biden Administration—more than half of the 43 million borrowers who are eligible for debt relief (Forbes).

303 Creative to Fight for 1st Amendment Before Supreme Court Monday
This case carries massive first amendment implications. Most significant case we have had in years. Alliance Defending Freedom: Lorie Smith is an artist who runs her own design studio, 303 Creative. She specializes in graphic and website design and loves to visually convey messages in every site she creates. She was excited to expand her portfolio to create websites that celebrate marriage between a man and a woman, but Colorado made clear she’s not welcome in that space. A Colorado law is censoring what Lorie wants to say and requiring her to create designs that violate her beliefs about marriage. In July 2021, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit ruled against Lorie, holding that Colorado can force her to create websites promoting messages that contradict her beliefs about marriage ( Alliance Defending Freedom). Scotusblog: On Dec. 5 the justices will hear oral argument in 303 Creative v. Elenis, a clash between free speech rights and LGBTQ rights ( Scotusblog).

EU Seeks to Cap Russian Oil Price at $60, Poland Holds Out
Wall Street Journal: The executive body of the European Union has asked its 27 member countries to cap the price of Russian oil at $60, officials and diplomats involved in the discussions said. The plan, using the clout of the EU’s insurance and shipping industries, is part of the West’s effort to crimp Moscow’s ability to wage war in Ukraine while keeping global crude prices steady. But whether that plan can go forward hinges on a response from Poland. All 27 EU countries need to sign off on the proposal for it to move ahead as planned on Monday—no other bloc member raised an objection to the plan on Thursday. Poland asked for extra time to consider it, Polish and other EU officials said, who added a decision wouldn’t come before Friday ( Wall Street Journal).

Appeals Court Rules Special Master Appointed to Review Trump Documents is Improper
Townhall: An appeals court ruled that the appointment of a special master after the search of former President Trump’s Florida home was improper, removing a hurdle the Justice Department said had delayed its criminal investigation into the retention of top-secret government information. The ruling now clears the way for them to at least 22,000 pages as part of their investigation the entire tranche of documents seized during an FBI raid in August on Trump’s Florida residence ( Townhall). National Review: The former president could appeal to the Supreme Court. The chance that the justices would agree to hear the appeal — at this early stage, when Trump has not been charged and the Justice Department has not yet attempted to use any of the Mar-a-Lago documents against him — is nil ( National Review).

Biden Willing to Meet with Putin to End War Against Ukrainian
New York Times: Standing beside the French leader who has championed the need for dialogue with Moscow, President Biden said he would talk to President Vladimir V. Putin, but only in consultation with NATO allies and only if the Russian leader indicated he was “looking for a way to end the war.” Mr. Biden’s public expression of conditioned willingness to reach out to Mr. Putin gratified French officials and provided unexpected support for President Emmanuel Macron’s outreach. Mr. Biden noted that Mr. Putin had shown no interest yet in ending his invasion, but said that if that changed, “I’ll be happy to sit down with Putin to see what he has in mind” ( New York Times).

Oakland Approves Measure Giving Adults $100 for Donating to Political Campaigns
Fox News: Oakland, California, passed a measure that gives residents taxpayer-funded “Democracy Dollars” to donate to political campaigns in a bid to increase voter turnout and to broaden campaign opportunities to candidates who lack deep financial resources. Characterized by the San Francisco Chronicle this week as an “under the radar measure,” the bill was supported by 74% of voters in the Nov. 8 election. The Fair Elections Act, placed on the ballot as Measure W, requires the city to send adult residents, including non-U.S. citizens who hold Green Cards, four $25 vouchers every two years to be donated to local political campaigns.
