Dear John

Last night we got an email from Western Union, the global financial transfer company, confirming that they would stop doing business with a bank in Burma owned by the Burmese military.

Since we first put Western Union on our ‘Dirty List’ for helping to fund the military, back in November 2018, we have been campaigning for Western Union to stop funding genocide. Hundreds of Burma Campaign UK supporters emailed the company, and more than 30 other human rights organisations joined the campaign.

And we won!
Western Union is one of the largest cross border financial transfer companies in the world and is the biggest company so far to cut their business ties to the military. This is a significant step forward in our campaign to stop international companies funding genocide and crimes against humanity in Burma.

Western Union was using the military-owned Myawaddy Bank as one of their agents in Burma. Myawaddy Bank is a subsidiary of a giant military business conglomerate called Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd (UMEHL). Profits from Myawaddy Bank benefit the military.

We will be stepping up pressure on other companies on our ‘Dirty List’. Watch out for new actions soon.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the campaign. This just shows how we can make a difference when we campaign together.
