Dear John,

As you might know, our motto at the Fraser Institute is “if it matters, we measure it”.

Not much could matter more in the wake of the global COVID pandemic than conducting a sober, data-driven analysis of the reaction to it and the resulting governmental policies. We need to record what worked and what didn’t.

That is why we are releasing a new series of essays that measure and explore the unprecedented reaction to the historic pandemic.

The first one, written by Fraser Institute senior fellow Ken Green, was released last week.

The essay analyzes risk from exposure to COVID-19 viral particles, the risk of infection and re-transmission, and the risk of morbidity and mortality. Green recognizes that humanity’s horrendous interpretations of these risks led to the implementation of draconian, historically novel disease-control policies.

And we can’t forget about the fiscal policies that soon followed!

Another recent Fraser Institute study found that Ottawa increased spending during the pandemic far beyond what was necessary to tackle COVID: 40% of the federal budget deficit during the pandemic (2020 to 2021) was not related to the pandemic!

This study was covered extensively by news outlets across the country, and was shared by thousands of Canadians on social media.

More COVID essays will be released over the coming months. If you agree that this type of research is important, I’d like to ask you to make a donation today [[link removed][campaignid]].

We of course don’t accept government funding to conduct this research and release these vital essays – we rely on supporters like you.

Thank you for your continued support!

Sincerely,

Niels Veldhuis
