John,
While President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan remains blocked in the courts, there is some good news for those with education debt. Last month, the president extended the pause on student loan payments through June 30, 2023 (or until the lawsuit is resolved). The pause had been set to expire at the end of this year, so this extension will help millions of families.
But we need more than pauses on federal loan payments. And we don’t need to rely on conservative judges and justices in order to tackle the student debt crisis. Congress can act now, before the end of the year, and before control of the U.S. House changes hands in January.
Click here to demand Congress cancel education debt for millions of people now, during the lame-duck session!
President Biden’s plan would cancel $10,000 in federal student education debt for anyone who made less than $125,000 in 2020 or 2021. And it would cancel an additional $10,000 for anyone who received Federal Pell Grants.
But Congress can go even further, canceling education debt for all 43 million people caught in the education debt trap. Canceling student loan debt is not only an economic justice issue but also a racial justice issue, and it would help to close the racial wealth gap.
Student loans widen the racial wealth gap, particularly for Black students. Loans with high interest rates keep people mired in debt their whole lives, simply for following our society’s recommendations to seek higher education. Canceling student debt would restore access to education as a right and relieve a heavy burden from struggling families.
Add your name now to demand Congress abolish education debt and lift tens of millions of people out of the education debt trap.
We’re also taking on medical debt and more. Together, we’re fighting for a more just society that addresses the needs of the many, not just the wealthy few.
In solidarity,
Rashida
