CHBA BC Looks Forward to Collaborating with New Premier on B.C's Housing Issues
CHBA BC
This week CHBA BC sent a letter to David Eby to congratulate him on his new role as the 37th Premier of British Columbia.
Over the years CHBA BC has established a strong working relationship with Premier Eby and have hosted him at many meetings, housing tours and events. We are encouraged by the immediate, promising actions taken to create more housing through the Housing Supply Act and the establishment of a standalone ministry dedicated to addressing BC’s significant, complex housing issues.
CHBA BC, alongside our eight local associations and 2,200 members of the residential construction sector, look forward to continuing our collaboration with the BC government as a strong voice on solutions that fulfill B.C.’s residential needs, while also balancing climate change and affordability.
The full letter is available here on our website.

CHBA CI Says the Work to Develop Housing Targets Should Start Now
Radio NL
The Housing Supply Act, announced by new premier David Eby last week, is being seen as a positive move forward by CHBA BC and our local associations. At CHBA CI, the association’s president, Tom Calne, is encouraging municipalities in the central interior to get the work started on establishing housing plans.
The legislation will set targets for municipalities with the intention to increase housing supply and speed up development. It should be in force by mid-2023. Initially, the Province will apply housing targets to eight to 10 municipalities, determined by community plans and growth projections based on census data.
Whether or not the city of Kamloops is identified as one of these municipalities, CHBA’s president says the local government needs to get moving on developing its housing supply target plan.

Government of Canada Announces New Collaborative Approach for National Model Codes
Government of Canada
Recently, the federal government announced a new governance model for the National Model Codes development system. With this new approach, the code development system is intended to be more responsive to provincial and territorial code priorities and will result in more efficient construction in Canada.
At both the provincial and national level, CHBA BC has ensured our members' voice has been heard on the new code development governance model. Until December 23, the public is invited to respond to proposed changes to the 2020 National Model Code. You can provide your feedback on the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes website. Your feedback is an important element in CHBA BC’s submission to the national public review.
As the construction industry employs nearly 1.4 million Canadians, a harmonized set of codes reduces the regulatory burden and removes internal trade barriers. The federal government says it will contribute to lower construction costs for industry and reduce internal trade barriers related to manufacturing, operation, inspection, education, and training. The adoption of more harmonized codes is also expected to accelerate the construction of energy-efficient buildings, creating more affordable and efficient homes, while also helping to meet Canada's net-zero goals.

Professional development for renovators being explored
CHBA
A survey undertaken by CHBA’s Canadian Renovators’ Council asked renovator members to identify where they most wanted more information and support from CHBA. The top three topics of interest for training were: Building Codes, Energy Efficiency, and Contracts. Through the Council, CHBA is actively reviewing training modules and delivery methods to provide renovator members with practical knowledge on those three topics. And if you didn’t know, CHBA’s renovators already have access to a sample renovation contract that can be amended to suit your company and/or the job, and a guide to contracts for homeowners to help them make smart decisions when choosing a renovator.

Get up to $15K in funding to modernize your business
CHBA
You know there are likely areas of your business that could be streamlined and improved through digital technology, but who has time to figure that all out? As technology advances, it can be challenging – and expensive – for small-to-medium businesses to keep up.
To help, the federal government’s Canada Digital Adoption Program (CDAP) is providing up to $15,000 for you to hire a recognized advisor to assess your digital transformation needs and come up with a plan to modernize your business. Then, if you want, you can apply for an interest-free loan to implement the plan. How can digital transformation help you? It could include improving communication and collaboration, automating repetitive tasks and processes (like contracts, payroll, and more), improving customer experiences, and more.
Learn more about the program here, or by reading CHBA’s FAQ and Summary.
