State Senator Lindsey M. Williams, Your District 38
Update

*

*The New 38th PA Senate District!**

As a result of
the constitutionally mandated redistricting of all Senate districts,
we're very excited to officially welcome residents in Sharpsburg and
Pittsburgh's 10th Ward, including Garfield, Morningside, Stanton
Heights, and Upper Lawrenceville to the new Senate District 38! The
new district lines take effect on December 1 and we can't wait to
start building these new relationships and getting involved in the new
areas of the district.

We will certainly miss the friends that
we've made in Millvale, Franklin Park, Marshall Township, and Bradford
Woods, and while we don't represent you directly, we'll still be in
the area and see you at local events. We look forward to continuing to
work with you on joint projects!

*Gridlock: How Senate Rules Block Good Policy*

*A
Virtual Roundtable Discussion on Senate Rules

Wednesday, December
7, **6:00 pm** - **7:00 pm*

Senator Katie Muth and I will be
hosting "Gridlock: How Senate Rules Block Good Policy," a Virtual
Roundtable Discussion on the need for Senate Rules Reform on
Wednesday, December 7 from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. For far too long, the
operating rules of the Senate have allowed the Majority Party to
prioritize politics over policy and silence members who are trying to
advocate for their constituencies and often, for what is right and
just.

For example, the Senate rules stop even common sense,
popular legislation, like banning the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet
stores, from coming up for a vote. Despite growing attention to this
problem, the rules haven't changed. Pennsylvania's bloated and
expensive Legislature gets shockingly little done. This has to change.

During
this conversation, Senator Muth and I will discuss our package of
proposed Rules Reforms for the upcoming 2023-24 Session that will
promote transparency, encourage public participation, advance good
policy, and hold Senators accountable to the public. The roundtable
discussion will be hosted on Zoom and will allow for attendees to ask
questions throughout the event.

roundtable discussion at Meeting Registration - Zoom [link

*2022 Events Review**

This week we are featuring one of
our favorite events of 2022 - Dogs and Democracy. Policy and puppies
are a great combination!

*Highland
Park Dogs and Democracy!*

We thoroughly enjoyed our four-legged and
two-legged friends who came out for our 2022 Dogs and Democracy event
in Highland Park [link 6] in September! It was a great opportunity to
meet with constituents and share information on protecting people and
pets from ticks, Animal Friends [link 7] resources, and updates on
animal welfare legislation. The coffee from Coffee Tree Roasters [link
8] and yummy donuts from Oram's [link 9] made the morning
conversations all the sweeter. We love this event and have held it
every year since 2019. We look forward to the next one in
2023!

I'm proud
to announce that three projects in District 38 will receive

closer to home, and ensure that students have every chance to succeed
academically.

The RACP recipients are:

-
$1.5 million to East
Liberty Development Inc. for rehabilitation of Saints Peter and Paul
Event Center; (pictured)

-
$1 million to AHN Wexford [link 11];
and

-
$500,000 to Steel City Squash [link 12] for expansion of
their athletic and academic program facility.

*Hampton
Daisy Troop Earns the Local Government Badge*

Recently, I was able
to help the Daisy Troop [link 14] in Hampton Township [link 15] earn
their local government badge. I had a chance to talk about what I do
as a State Senator, and then I answered lots of questions from them.

*PA's
Accessible Book Project*

Last week I had the opportunity to read
"Everyone Gets a Say" by Jill Twiss and EG Keller for the Library of
Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians - LAMP [link 16] and their The
Library of Congress [link 17] accessibility project. LAMP has added
over 700 audio books to the National Library Service Catalog of
accessible books for people who have visual, physical, or other
reading disabilities. You can learn more about their recording studio
at [link removed] [link 18]. I'm so excited for
the recording to be available soon!

*Senator Lindsey Williams Named NASW Pennsylvania
Legislator of the Year*

Recently I had the absolute honor of being
named the NASW Pennsylvania [link 20] Legislator of the Year. Social
workers across PA and the country have faced enormous challenges
during the pandemic as more and more people have sought out mental
health services and needed the help of our social safety net. They
have been essential to the social, emotional, and physical recovery of
our families and communities as we come through the pandemic and into
this new phase of "normal."

I'm lucky to have worked with many
social workers, who have helped identify the highest needs in our
schools and communities, allowing the legislature to prioritize
addressing the root causes of problems and their
consequences.

These conversations have led to legislation that
addresses social worker student debt and gets more caring adults into
our school buildings, like my Internship Stipends for School
Counselors, Social Workers, Psychologists, and Nurses that was passed
in this year's budget, and additional mental health funding in the
PCCD School Mental Health and Safety & Security Grants.

It is my
honor to support the incredible, life-changing work that the Social
Workers of Pennsylvania do every single day. I cannot thank them
enough for what they do for our students, our families, and our
communities.
