Dear John, Today, the National Institute for Reproductive Health releases our new report, Meeting the Moment Post-Dobbs: A Review of Proactive Abortion Policies Passed in States & Localities. In this report, we highlight the wave of innovative proactive policies that passed in states and localities in the first three months following the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. During this period, we saw a record number of laws enacted to protect and expand access to abortion in 17 states and at least 24 localities. Long before the fall of Roe, NIRH has been urging state and municipal leaders across the nation to protect access to reproductive health care and expand abortion access. This report details a wave of action taken by advocates and elected leaders at a critical moment, and is a powerful reminder of the tremendous impact that can be made when we fight for abortion access at the state and local levels. John, we also know this is a tremendously difficult time: today marks 160 days since the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision; 160 days since millions of people who counted on abortion care as a protected right had the rug pulled out from under them. Yet in the face of this national crisis and public health emergency, advocates and many elected leaders across the country stepped up and fought back. Whether you are an advocate or elected official, we hope that this review provides you with some hope and inspiration for what is possible and what is still needed. If you’re interested in pursuing any of these policies or want to work together on something new, please email [email protected]. In solidarity, ANDREA MILLER President
