Dear John,
Saturday, December 10, marks International Human Rights Day. As soccer fans across the globe fix their eyes on Qatar, we must not forget that the World Cup was made possible by authorities committing extensive human rights abuses that resulted in the death of thousands of workers and the imprisonment of activists.
This and other human rights issues in Qatar, including the plight of three activists who have languished in jail since July after organizing a social media campaign against arbitrary travel bans, should be at the forefront of our minds.
Political prisoners and others fighting for freedom deserve our attention for more than one day of the year and must be integrated into long-term commitments until the day they are all freed.
