Dear Friend --
Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) just released their annual
data and I’m proud to share we’ve seen a sharp decrease in euthanasia,
an big increase in adoptions, and an 88% save rate for cats and dogs
combined-the highest it’s been in the last decade.
I made a commitment when elected Mayor that we would increase
adoptions and reduce euthanasia every single year. We are meeting that
goal.
With our new Compassion Saves approach, our Animal Care Services
team and our amazing volunteers and rescue groups are doing an
incredible job using compassion, data and a network of supporters to
get more animals into homes and save lives.
- Live release for cats and dogs combined went from 79% in 2018 to
88% in 2019.
- The total euthanasia rate was reduced by 33% in 2019. That means
nearly 5,000 fewer dogs and cats being euthanized than in 2010.
- Adoption rates increased by 45% from 686 in 2018 to 995 in
2019.
I want to thank our LBACS Director, Staycee Dains, for her strong
leadership, all of our hard-working staff at the ACS shelter and the
many volunteers who donate their time and energy to taking care of
animals in our city-it’s their commitment and love for animals that
enables us to save so many lives and help so many animals find a
forever home. I greatly appreciate their contributions as Mayor and as
an animal-lover myself.
We will continue to work hard to bring down euthanasia rates
and increase adoptions with our Compassion Saves approach, ensuring
LBACS remains one of the best animal care services
anywhere.
Go Long Beach,
Mayor Robert Garcia
