The question is as blunt as the times are dire. Are we winning or losing the planetary endgame?

As Russia bombs Ukraine, civil war brews in the US, inflation devastates poor people worldwide and the worst climate killing countries continuing to collude with corporations to ramp up fossil fuel death machinery—

It looks like we might be losing.

But then again . . . revolts are sweeping China in response to Xi's iron fist, an uprising of the people is overtaking Iran, climate radicals are shutting down oil refineries in the UK and autocrats everywhere are suddenly playing defence—

Could we the people win out?

In our [year-end issue]([link removed]) we argue both sides, with our most optimistic, bright-eyed inclinations colliding with our bleakest and grimmest intuitions. Truth is, neither one is sufficient for our salvation. To stave off extinction, we’re going to have to muster both the courage to face the harshest truths and the guts to imagine a radically different one.
