Hi, John, it’s Greg Casar! 👋🏽 I was just elected to Congress during the 2022 House elections to represent Texas’ 35th district. At 33 years old, I’m one of the youngest Congressmembers elected this cycle, and I’m excited to be a part of a new wave of young, passionate, progressives in Congress!

I wouldn’t be where I’m at today without the power of young people and youth movements like Sunrise Movement behind me.

Youth power, union power, people power, and a Green New Deal won this election — period.

Young people across the country organized through phone banking, textbanking, and more to turn out thousands of people in my district to vote for me, a representative who will prioritize what they care about — including tackling the climate crisis, investing in renewable energy, and ensuring workers and their unions lead our climate action. I’m so grateful!

John, young people are acutely aware of the issues that affect them now and will affect them in the coming years. And we are ready to fight.

The lesson is this: you can win or lose an election — but you can’t stop a movement. We are in this for the long haul. We will not turn Texas blue in one quick and simple election — but we are on the path there. People power will trump the far-right’s corporate millions.

When Texas experienced the freeze and power crisis in 2021, my district was hit hard. I was out in the community, delivering water and blankets in the freezing cold to do what I could to protect my community. Meanwhile, Gov. Abbott was blaming wind turbines and Sen. Ted Cruz fled to Cancun.

I knew then, just like I know now, that we have fix the Texas electrical grid to ensure Texans aren’t left in the cold without power or water ever again. The Green New Deal can address the grid and so much more, and that’s why I ran on tackling the climate crisis and creating a Green New Grid as a central part of my platform.

Climate disasters don’t have to be the norm.
