John,

My name is Dean Santos and I’m the Technology Director here at Immigrants Rising. Growing up undocumented, it was hard to think of the future—it’s hard even now as a DACA recipient—but becoming involved in undocumented youth organizing really opened my eyes to what the possibilities were.

I was at the gathering of undocumented youth groups in California over a decade ago where the idea of DACA was first proposed. It sounded great to me, but I didn’t think it was possible. I couldn’t see how we could demand something that seemed so mind blowing at the time.

A lot has happened since then. We really learned our own power. We learned to flex our political muscles. They can’t take that from us no matter what happens to DACA.

I’m grateful that over the years, Immigrants Rising has connected me with a lot of wonderful people. When we’re together we don’t have to worry about explaining why things are the way they are. Just by virtue of being undocumented there’s that shared experience. Even when things are hard and the future is so uncertain, we know we don't have to go it alone.
All my best,
Dean
