The wait is over: Dec. conference is this weekend!

We finally know the results of the midterm election. After months of preparing, CCL’s free, virtual December conference is this weekend! This is your chance to find out what CCL has in store for 2023, and what we’ll be asking Congress for.

In addition to all of the cool speakers, workshops, and seminars we mentioned in the previous Weekly Briefing, you can also look forward to our virtual Action Team Fair on Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. ET. This fair will include 41 of CCL’s Action Teams, and the opportunity to pop in and learn more about each. Attendees can also check out the conference reception on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. ET. We’ll also have a virtual mixer for students on Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. ET.

During the conference, you’ll hear from members of Congress and distinguished speakers, such as Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN), Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY20), former U.S. Representative Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), high school senior and Group Co-Leader Gigi Santo, Research Manager of Climate Policy at the Niskanen Center Shuting Pomerleau, and many others.

We have so many fun and informative events planned. Register now and make sure you have the skills and information to make an even greater difference in 2023!

CCE Board Chair Dr. DeJarnett heading to White House

Dr. Natasha DeJarnett recently stepped down as the CCE Board Chair to accept a year-long White House fellowship.

"I am pleased to share with you that I have accepted the fellowship and will become the Deputy Director for Environmental Justice Data and Evaluation in the White House Council on Environmental Quality. It’s a one-year remote fellowship and starts on November 21st,” Dr. DeJarnett explained to the board.

Dr. DeJarnett will be taking a one-year leave of absence from the University of Louisville. You can wish her well in this tweet.

If you have a little time: Help us reach our fundraising goal!

When we announced that we had a $350,000 dollar-for-dollar gift match for Giving Tuesday, we were optimistic that CCLers could help us take advantage of this $700,000 opportunity to power our grassroots climate movement. And CCLers stepped up to the plate in a big way: we are happy to report that we exceeded our Giving Tuesday goal of $350,000, bringing in a total of $451,503! We’d like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who pitched in. Thank you so much!

The challenge is not quite over yet, as we need to reach our overall goal of $1.5 million by Dec. 31. Donations received now through the end of the year will allow us to recruit, train, and empower even more citizen lobbyists in 2023, positioning us to achieve more impactful climate victories. If you haven’t had a chance to give yet, or if you are in a position to give again, please make a year-end donation today!

If you have more time: Meet members of your chapter at the conference

Have you been looking for a way to plug into CCL but haven’t been able to find your footing in your local chapter yet? The December conference is a great way to meet and greet local CCLers and finally match a name with a face on the national level. Since virtual conferences are where many volunteers meet their local chapter members throughout the year, CCL has set up a virtual reception, an Action Team Fair, and a student mixer for you to meet other climate advocates. Find your local chapter here and start reaching out!

CCLers present Congresswoman with plaque

CCLers in El Paso presented Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX-16) with a plaque for her work on the Inflation Reduction Act.

Volunteers Bob Niland, nine-year-old Ximena Valdez, and Ian Levy Valdez presented the plaque.

“We talked about HR 2307, HR 4659, IRA, and the COP27 Conference,” wrote Ian, Chairman of the Green Fund Committee and Student Government Association member at the University of Texas in El Paso. “We represent three generations of El Pasoans who care about our climate and are lucky to have a climate champion represent us in Congress. My little sister presented the plaque to her and said, ‘Thank you for what you do to make the world a better place for me.'"

You can see Congresswoman Escobar’s response in the tweet below.
