John, these two beautiful people are my parents ⬆️.
They immigrated to the US over 30 years ago, when my mother was still pregnant with me. She swam across the Rio Grande– almost sacrificing her life in the process.
Then, having to work in exchange for cheap rent, my parents lived above the church with me and my siblings until I was 7 years-old. They regularly volunteered at the church's soup kitchen, and when my siblings and I were old enough, we were right beside them.
My parents taught me how to be brave, how to take what you're given and make a life out of it. They taught me how to work hard, and most importantly, they taught me to work for my community.
And the rest is history. I've been a champion for affordable housing, expanded Medicaid to seniors regardless of immigration status, and became the first Latina elected to Congress in the Midwest. And my parents and their hard work motivates me every day.
But motivation isn't enough, Friend. I'm fighting for my community, but I need a strong group of supporters behind me. We're in our final hours – will you donate to make sure we reach our End of Month Fundraising Goal by tonight?
