The World Health Organization has declared 2020 the Year of the Nurse and Midwife, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. We at the Campaign for Action welcome the recognition—and will continue, as we have for the past decade, to strengthen the profession that communities count on for better health.

Nurse Is Among 2019 AARP Purpose Prize Winners

Paul Leon’s tenacity and creativity led him to found an organization that helps homeless people find housing and access health care services. For his efforts, Leon, RN, BSN, MBA, has also earned an AARP Purpose Prize, which celebrates people 50 and older who are building a better future for all.

A Look Back at State and Federal Progress 

Policy matters. In 2019, 18 states considered legislation to improve the public’s access to care from nurses, and the bills that became law will help some 37 million people. Changes at the federal level, too, will allow nurses to contribute to greater care, including on opioid recovery.

Nurse Tackles Oral Health of Dementia Patients

People with dementia often resist mouth care, putting their overall health at risk. Rita Jablonski, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, learned strategies early on to help with oral care. Now she is part of a corps of nurses helping caregivers and family members meet the health needs of those with cognitive impairments.

Survey Seeks Ways to Support Nurse Family Caregivers

More nurses are caring for family members and friends even while outside their workplace, and the Difference Collaborative wants to understand how employers can better support these nurses. Nurse managers, leaders, and HR directors are asked to participate in the Nurse Family Caregiver Intervention Scorecard, an anonymous, 10-minute survey.

RWJF Leadership Programs Prepare for New Applicants

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has long trained tomorrow’s leaders through its four leadership development programs: Clinical Scholars; Culture of Health Leaders; Health Policy Research Scholars; and Interdisciplinary Research Leaders. On January 10, RWJF will seek new applicants. More information will appear in our January 21 Campaign Update

Help Choose the Theme of Nurses Month 2020

The World Health Organization has named 2020 the Year of the Nurse. That’s one reason the American Nurses Association plans to expand its celebration of National Nurses Week to last an entire month. ANA wants nurses’ ideas for a theme: Choose one of six offered, or suggest your own.

New - Caregiving Advisory Council Opens Online Survey 

The Family Caregiving Advisory Council, part of the Administration for Community Living (ACL), wants to hear from those involved in family caregiving as prepares its report to Congress. Responses will be considered as the ACL proposes a national family caregiving strategy.

New - Honor Your Contributions: Apply for AARP Purpose Prize 

Did you see a problem and create it a solution? Consider applying for AARP’s Purpose Prize, which celebrates the creativity, innovation, and inspiration that life experience brings. It is awarded to those 50 and older who are creating significant impact at the local, regional, national or global level. Deadline: March 31.

ANA Challenges Nurses, Teams to Get Innovative

The American Nurses Association invites nurses and nurse-led teams to apply for its 2020 ANA Innovation Awards. ANA will be honoring those whose product, program, project, or practice best exemplify nurse-led innovation in patient safety and/or outcomes. Deadline: January 15.

All Invited to Monthly Calls About Food, Housing Initiatives

What are the best ways to address food and housing insecurity, which are often the root causes of other health problems? The Root Cause Coalition offers two learning cohorts, sponsored by the Robert Wood Johsnon, so those interested in health equity can, through webinars and teleconference calls, understand how to design, implement, and evaluate social determinant interventions.

Funds to Nursing Schools Support Would-Be Faculty 

To increase the number of qualified nurse faculty, the Health Resources and Services Administration offers its Nurse Faculty Loan Program. Funds help nursing schools give loans to students who aim to become faculty members. Deadline: February 3.
