Woodrow Wilson and the Art of War Propaganda. Our Newest Animated Video.
In recent episodes of America: From Republic to Empire, we have looked at the consequences of America's first progressive president, Teddy Roosevelt. In our newest video, we look at the presidency of Woodrow Wilson and how he perfected the art of American war propaganda.
In Wilson's 1912 presidential campaign, he rode the wave of popular sentiment of keeping America from entering World War I, all the while he shared Roosevelt's progressive interests of expanding the American empire. To sell his true expansionist views, Wilson used successful, and cutting-edge, marketing persuasion to make his case.
In this episode, we look at how the popularity of commercial icons like Mr. Peanut helped give birth to America's own military mascot, Uncle Sam, as well as how Wilson used the message of opposition to World War I as a rejection of patriotism at home.
