The Many Ways Forests Near and Far Benefit Cities

Most people understand the benefits of urban trees, which provide green space to city dwellers while also cooling and cleaning urban air. But where do denser forests, located further away from populated areas, come in? New research from WRI and Pilot Project’s Cities4Forests finds that more remote forests provide many benefits to cities — including curbing climate change, preventing floods, improving the water supply, boosting people’s health and more. Fiji and Why Climate Finance Matters

Small island nations are some of the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, and Fiji is no exception. Cyclone Winston and then the COVID-19 pandemic delivered consecutive blows to the country’s citizens and tourism-dependent economy. This podcast episode explores how different specialized climate finance from wealthier nations and the private sector can help Fiji become more resilient. Listen here

Zero-emission Delivery Zones: Reducing the Impact of Online Shopping

The holiday shopping rush is upon us, and with it, emissions and air pollution from delivery trucks. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, urban freight and delivery services have steadily risen. A new WRI research paper unpacks this emerging strategy and provides policy makers with a blueprint for how to apply it in their city. Read more.

Tapping the Ocean’s Carbon-removal Potential

Cutting greenhouse gases is not enough to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F) and avert some of the worst impacts of climate change. Instead, we need to go even further by actively removing carbon from the atmosphere. This is where the ocean presents an unlikely opportunity. A growing number of companies and governments are turning to the ocean as a means of carbon removal. A new WRI report examines the latest science on ocean carbon sequestration to answer vital questions regarding this process. Read more
