Message from Rep. Tracey Mann. Having Trouble Viewing? Click Here. Fellow Kansan, Agriculture is the heartbeat of the Big First District. Each month, I will highlight the life and work of Kansas ag heroes – the people who make our state the pilot light of America and who inspire me to continue fighting for Kansas farmers, ranchers, and agricultural producers. Yours in service, Mann.House.Gov Kansas Ag Hero of the Month: Arturo and Wrenn Pacheco Originally from New Mexico and Texas respectively, Arturo and Wrenn Pacheco met at Texas Tech University where they exhibited Angus cattle at local and national events for their school’s livestock show team. After graduation, Arturo worked on a ranch tagging calves and synchronizing heifers during the breeding season. He headed back to TTU to pursue his Master of Science Degree in Animal Breeding and Genetics, after which he and Wrenn were married. The couple then moved to Manhattan, KS so Arturo could work towards his Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition at Kansas State University. There, the Pachecos fell in love with the Flint Hills and decided to stay. They have a deep love for Kansas, a willingness to be self-starters, and a commitment to agriculture that is truly inspiring. The Pachecos represent the future of American agriculture because they carry on the traditions of its past. Arturo and Wrenn understand that good beef starts long before the steak hits the plate. Arturo brings his expertise in feeding and finishing cattle to his own beef business while also helping his clients all over the country provide excellent products for their consumers. He believes in developing heifers in the same way that they will be managed as mature cows, which promotes healthy growth and reproductive capacity. Meanwhile, Wrenn – a genuine cowgirl, is the heart and soul of Pacheco Beef. She tells the family story, fills each order personally, and is always ready to help her customers make selections when they come into the Beef Shop. The Pachecos started their operation from square one, like the homesteaders that came before them. They are carrying on the legacy of their ancestors while building new traditions for their children. Recently, their eight-year-old son Leo said to his mom, “One day I will take over Pacheco Beef, and I have big plans for it.” Leo and his brother Ross are well on their way to being 6th generation ranchers, and the family operation is growing stronger every year. The Pachecos are ag heroes because they are serving humbly as caretakers of agriculture’s heritage while bravely stewarding its traditions into a future of unknowns. Wrenn and Arturo chose Kansas, they chose this way of life, and each day, as they check their cattle on horseback in the Kansas Flint Hills with their sons in tow, they represent the bridge between the past and the future of agriculture.
