NOVEMBER 2022
Dear John,
With the arrival of person number 8 billion on the 15 November, we featured
in over 270 national and international media outlets this month, including
print, radio and TV. We've included a taster of it below, but for a more
comprehensive list take a look at the media coverage page [3] on our
website.
We also had a team of people at the International Conference of Family
Planning in Thailand, where we were sponsors, staffed a booth and held a
live event. It was Black Friday last week, and we marked the day with a
protest at the Apple Store in London as part of our _We Don't Buy It
_campaign. We are also in the middle of this year's Big Give Christmas
Challenge, where you can have your donation doubled!
As ever, thank you so much for your ongoing support.

What’s been happening to UK aid spending?
The answer; cuts, cuts and more cuts.
The key takeaway from this article on _Bond_ [7] is that it's the most
vulnerable countries that have been hit hardest by the UK’s cut in aid
spending, and that's not likely to change anytime soon.

POPULATION & ENVIRONMENT
Do we really have 8 billion opportunities?
_"I’m not naturally a pessimist, but I wouldn’t say I like the
hypocritical flowery language around the 8 billion people milestone when we
have already stunted billions of human lives, particularly young girls and
women. I fear that this language is encouraging pro-natal governments to up
their game in making young girls and women baby machines."_
If you read one thing today, we recommend it's this powerful piece from PM
consultant Florence Blondel.

The fundamental linking of population and planet
_"Over 270m women worldwide still lack access to and choice over family
planning; nearly 130m girls are out of school [...] The United Nations
Family Planning Association has estimated it would cost about $70 billion
to deliver family planning for all by 2030. Not a huge amount of money –
less than a third of Elon Musk’s personal fortune of $274 billion."_
Read Robin Maynard's personal take on the 8 billion milestone, where the
conversation falls short and what needs to be done.

Making friends at the International Conference of Family Planning
(ICFP)
Earlier this month, we sent a small team of people to Pattaya City,
Thailand, to attend this year's ICFP. With over 3,500 delegates, it was a
great opportunity to meet like-minded people and hear many inspiring
stories from those working on the ground. Empower to Plan Project
Coordinator, Catriona Spaven-Donn, reflects on the conference.

Talking about Nationalist Pressure on Reproductive Rights
While at ICFP, we held a Live Event looking at the issue of nationalist
pressure on reproductive rights. During the event, we presented PM’s
Welcome to Gilead report and highlighted certain population policies in
India recently reported on for PM, including measures introduced in a
number of Indian states imposing penalties on people with more than two
children, (as mentioned in the story above).

Quote of the month
_“The generations-long argument between those who uniquely blame
overpopulation and those who maintain that consumption is the biggest
contribution to the climate emergency must be ditched.”_
- John Vidal, author and journalist, from his Guardian article, _It should
not be controversial to say a population of 8 billion will have a grave
impact on the climate [17]_
