Senate Passes Legislation to Codify Same Sex Marriage, Jeopardizing Religious Liberty
Wall Street Journal: The Senate passed landmark legislation protecting Americans’ access to same-sex marriage, solidifying rights that were established in a 2015 Supreme Court ruling. Lawmakers voted 61 to 36 to approve the legislation, which is intended to codify the ability of same-sex and interracial couples to get married and requires states to recognize the marriages. A dozen Republicans joined Democrats to vote in favor of the legislation ( Wall Street Journal). Albert Mohler: The new amended Senate bill—the “commonsense” bill that “protects Americans’ religious liberties”—actually does no such thing. The amended language includes vague assurances that the legislation will not violate religious freedom but it mostly assures us that the bill will not do what no one claimed it would do, such as require congregations and churches to solemnize same-sex marriages ( WNG). Alliance Defending Freedom: It undermines religious freedom everywhere and exposes Americans throughout the country to predatory lawsuits by activists seeking to use the threat of litigation to silence debate and exclude people of faith from the public square ( Alliance Defending Freedom).

Musk on Apple Threat to Twitter: “This is a battle for the future of civilization”
Fox News: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said it is “offensive” that the White House plans to monitor Elon Musk’s Twitter, stressing that Republicans “will no longer let government go after people simply because of their political views.” McCarthy, R-Calif., after a meeting at the White House Tuesday with President Biden, Vice President Harris and congressional leaders, was asked about White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s comments Monday that the White House would be “keeping a close eye” on Twitter under Musk ( Fox News). Interesting they will monitor Musk, but not any other tech company for silencing conservatives or even Apple threatening to remove twitter from the App Store. Elon Musk: This is a battle for the future of civilization. If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead ( Twitter).

Apple Receiving Backlash for Threatening to Remove Twitter While Groveling to China
Outkick: Elon Musk says Apple Inc. is threatening to withhold Twitter from its App Store. Apple has not disputed the claim from over 24 hours ago. Apple has also pulled advertising on Twitter in response to Musk’s purchase of the service in October. But while Apple aches at the thought of an internet open for robust dialogue, it has shown no such concerns over TikTok, a Chinese-controlled social media service ( Outkick). National Review: “That would be a huge, huge mistake, and it would be a really raw exercise of monopolistic power that I think would merit a response from the United States Congress.” @GovRonDeSantis slams Apple for reportedly patching out AirDrop in China and threatening Twitter and @elonmusk ( Twitter). Marie Oakes : Let this sink in: Apple is threatening to take Twitter off of its App Store, but not TikTok. Even after FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr sent them a letter last summer asking them to remove TikTok because of “serious national threats posed by TikTok” ( Twitter). Hugh Hewitt: After years and years of having my handy iPhone with me, I’ll drop it and witch to Android in a second if Apple drops Twitter from the app store. Done. Over. I can’t believe Apple would be that dumb, but who knows ( Twitter).

House, Senate Move Quickly to Pass Legislation to Avert Rail Strike
Wall Street Journal: Congressional leaders agreed Tuesday to head off a nationwide strike by railroad workers, promising to pass legislation quickly that would avert a work stoppage and prevent damage to the economy despite their misgivings about intervening in the dispute. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that House lawmakers will aim to pass legislation Wednesday that accepts the original labor union agreement negotiated by Biden administration officials plus additional railway worker benefits added from subsequent negotiations. In the Senate, where bipartisan support would be needed, leaders also said they would aim to quickly pass the legislation once it is sent over from the House ( Wall Street Journal).

Supreme Court Hears Oral Arguments in Immigration Case United States v. Texas
Daily Wire: Oral arguments began on Tuesday at the Supreme Court in United States v. Texas, in which Texas and Louisiana are fighting against the Biden administration’s policy of prioritizing certain illegal immigrants for deportation, leaving the states to fend for themselves against the huge number of illegal immigrants in their states. The issue at hand was catalyzed by a September 2021 memorandum from Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas in which he argued, “We do not have the resources to apprehend and seek the removal of every one of these noncitizens. Therefore, we need to exercise our discretion and determine whom to prioritize for immigration enforcement action” ( Daily Wire). Texas Signal: The case, United States v. Texas, has the potential to upend federal immigration policy ( Twitter).

More Americans Than Ever Choose to Be Alone, Which Leads to Anxiety and Depression
Washington Post: The covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc on our social lives. Cancellations, closures and fear of a potentially deadly infection led us to hunker down and avoid acquaintances, co-workers and extended family. Time spent with friends went down. Time spent alone went up. And now for the scarier news: Our social lives were withering dramatically before covid-19 ( Washington Post). Reporter Derek Thompson: There is a 100% chance that this graph is a core reason for America’s surge of anxiety and depression. Time spent with other people has plummeted—for every age group, ethnicity, gender, geography, and income level ( Twitter).

Disney’s Bob Iger Was Sorry to See Company Enter Political Arena
Spencer Brown: The clues as to Iger’s plans for Disney during his two-year return stint came from his first town hall meeting with Walt Disney Company employees, in which he answered several questions on some recent Disney controversies, including the losing fights it picked with Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis ( Townhall). Christopher Rufo: Iger expressed regret that Disney engaged in the high-profile fight against Gov. DeSantis, which resulted in the state legislature stripping the company of its special administrative status. “I was sorry to see us dragged into that battle” ( Twitter).
