John, Let's make some change in Texas! Rush $5, $10, or $25, to progressive candidate, Celia Israel in the Austin mayoral runoff. On December 13th there will be runoff in Austin, Texas, the 11th largest city in the country, a few thousand people shy of a population of 1 million. On election night--November 8th--State Rep. Celia Israel led State Senator Kirk Watson by 15,000 votes, 121,862 to 106,508, even though Watson had outspent Israel by more than 2:1. But nobody reached the magical 50% threshold, so just like in the Georgia Senate race, there will be a runoff, just a week later. There is no bad guy in this race. Kirk Watson served admirably as a then-young, Austin Mayor 1997-2001, ran for Attorney General and came up short, and then successfully served as a state senator, before trying to win his old job back. He is the kind of experienced, liberal politician you wanna see stay involved as an advisor, but, like in Washington, it is time for new blood in Austin. Celia Israel has not only been an outstanding state representative, but she is Latina and a lesbian, which would be a first for Austin, and just the kind of barrier we need to keep knocking down until there are none left standing in our way. We need different perspectives in our higher offices, and as one of the power centers in Texas, failing right-wing Republicanism in the state executive offices and running the state legislature, Austin will be a Democratic power center over the next few years in Texas. | |
