John,
Right now, members of Congress are returning to Washington D.C. for the first time in the new year, and the first time since Donald Trump ordered the assassination of an Iranian general last week.
Over the last few days, the White House has issued conflicting and dubious justifications for the assassination. Meanwhile, Trump himself has launched further escalatory threats — including absolutely vile threats to attack Iranian civilians and cultural sites that, if carried out, would constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions.1
Donald Trump is an erratic, unstable commander-in-chief, and the first order of business for Congress must be to stop him and his war-hungry advisors before their actions result in this cycle of violence spiraling even further out of control.
Can you call your members of Congress TODAY and urge them to do all they can to stop Trump's march to all-out war on Iran?
Call Congress now »
Later this week, the full House of Representatives plans to vote on a War Powers Resolution that would "direct the removal of the United States Armed Forces from hostilities against Iran that have not been authorized by Congress."2 Legislation has also been introduced in both the House and Senate that would block funding for military action against Iran.3 And other measures may be introduced in the coming days.
Polls are showing Americans largely opposed to war. But many experts say that the Trump administration's actions have put Iran in a position where they will be all but forced to retaliate. And if that happens, the beating of war drums from the same band of warmongers and subservient news media who got us into Iraq could become deafening.
That's why, on their first day back, it is so critical that every member of Congress — both Republicans AND Democrats — hear from their constituents that we do NOT want war.
Can you call your members of Congress RIGHT NOW and ask them to speak out publicly against Trump's march to war, and pass a resolution this week prohibiting war with Iran?
In solidarity,
Team WFP
P.S. On Thursday, January 9th at 5pm local time, WFP members will be joining with the anti-war majority in this country to take to the streets to oppose Trump's war and say #NoWarWithIran. Check out the growing map and RSVP to an event near you.
