Can you join us in celebration – and help CSE prepare for the work ahead – by kicking in a Giving Tuesday donation?

John –

Big news: The U.S. Senate has reached final passage of the Respect for Marriage Act, a federal law that will go a long way toward protecting the freedom to marry for same-sex couples and interracial couples. This evening the Senate approved the bill, with strong bipartisan support, reflecting the supermajority of Americans, including in the South, who support the fundamental freedom to marry.

Our team at the Campaign for Southern Equality was honored to work with families from across the South to call for passage of this bill. Thousands of LGBTQ people and allies in our region contacted their Senators, met with them to express support, and shared their stories in the press and online. Many Southern Senators – a bipartisan group that includes the Senators from North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and West Virginia – voted the right way. Now it heads back to the House, where it passed overwhelmingly in July.

We know that the work doesn’t stop here, and we are clear-sighted about the many anticipated attacks facing LGBTQ people, especially transgender youth, in the year ahead. But it feels especially inspiring to see a significant victory for LGBTQ people today, on Giving Tuesday, when LGBTQ organizers everywhere are sharing stories about their work and impact on our community.

One project we were proud to work on this year was an open letter from participants of our “We Do” campaign, which CSE led from 2011-2015, standing with hundreds of brave same-sex couples as they requested marriage licenses across the South and were denied, illustrating the harms of marriage discrimination. We were honored to work with We Do participants to send an open letter to Southern Senators urging them to vote yes and ensure that no family ever again has to endure marriage discrimination again, no matter what happens at the US Supreme Court.

Please support critical work like this by making a donation of whatever you can – whether it’s $10 or $100, it makes an impact. ([link removed])

We are so grateful for your commitment to LGBTQ equality – today on Giving Tuesday and every day.

Thank you,
Adam Polaski
