John,

In the past week:
* Trump floated the idea of committing a war crime by threatening to bomb 52 Iranian cultural sites.
* Defense Secretary Mark Esper’s chief of staff announced his resignation at the end of the month.
* The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said a letter indicating U.S. troops would begin leaving Iraq was a draft that should not have been released.

For three years we have been regaled with reports detailing the chaos of the Trump administration.

We've seen the administration's unprecedented staff turnover rate, Trump's installation of diehard loyalists to acting positions in order to skirt Senate confirmation, and his repeated disregard for the rule of law that leaves aides scrambling to clean up his constitutional messes.

Now, all of that disruption is coming to a head: surrounded by inexperienced “yes men” who cannot, or will not, control his worst impulses, Trump has brashly brought us to the brink of an international crisis, leaving the Pentagon and the Defense Department in disarray as they try to deal with the fallout.

Human lives are on the line, and this is the state of our top decision-makers.

I hope that there are still some level-headed, consummate civil servants left within the administration that will be able to steer us away from total disaster, but I won't hold my breath.

If you're scared, confused, or downright terrified about the state of our country right now — you're not alone.
