Hi, John, it’s Summer Lee.
I’m a newly elected Congressmember — the first Black woman elected to Congress from Pennsylvania ever — and I had the honor of being endorsed by Sunrise Movement during the 2022 election cycle.
Organizing is my bread and butter. It’s what helped me win real results for working people and continue to make history in Pennsylvania.
I started out as a labor organizer and lawyer. When I threw my hat in the ring for the State House in 2018, you all with Sunrise Movement were right beside me and endorsed me, helping me become the first Black woman ever elected to the legislature from Western Pennsylvania.
Since 2018, I’ve continued to work together side-by-side with Sunrise Movement. I fought alongside you all to defeat fracking legislation, fight for police accountability, and more.
Together, we’re championing a Green New Deal, climate justice, housing justice, racial justice: aka a liveable future for all. Being in this movement together means we continually hold each other accountable, build and strengthen our relationships with each other and our goals, and expand our networks of connection as we fight for transformative change.
Sunrise Movement is an organization that plays a key role in electing new, nontraditional, progressive candidates to office.
I can’t wait to see Sunrise keep building strong multiracial, multigenerational coalitions across the country to help support candidates like me. That’s why this Giving Tuesday, I’m personally asking for you to give anything you can to Sunrise Movement. They’re so close to their $100,000 goal!
The 2022 elections made it clear that our movement is too strong to be overpowered even by the far-right, corporate super PACs — we’re winning!
Now it’s time to dig in our heels, lift each other up and make all our hard work during election season a reality. We can’t slow down now.
Together, we can build the foundation we need to elect more progressive leaders like myself to Congress and other government positions.
I see a future where all of our representatives in the Democratic party are accountable to movements like Sunrise and our young Black, brown, or working-class voters. But it starts right here, right now. We’ve got to commit to building this movement from the ground up.
Gratitude and people power,
Summer Lee
