Dear reader,
At a recent dinner I attended with college presidents, the overwhelming majority cited mental health as the major issue on their campus. This week, The Hechinger Report’s Olivia Sanchez writes about how religious groups are stepping in, adding mental health clinicians in campus religious hubs and training religious leaders to know when to refer students for psychological care. We also have news about another issue college presidents are less likely to call attention to: rising college prices. The cost of college almost always goes in one direction – up – which is why I urge you to take a look at a surprising new response and strategy: colleges that are cutting tuition.
This week we also drill down on some of the controversy and reaction to the “Sold a Story” podcast, which we co-published on our site with our partners from APM. We are still publishing letters in response, as I explain in this column about the so-called reading wars. I welcome your views.
Finally, a request. Sandwiched between two holidays comes an event with a great deal of meaning for us at The Hechinger Report: Giving Tuesday. It’s a big one for us because a generous donor offered to match every dollar you give up to $50,000. If you enjoy and rely on our reporting about innovation and inequality in education, please join us! I would be truly grateful.
