I wanted to give you an update on what’s been going on in the House since the election. Republicans officially flipped the House and gained a slim majority (still TBD on if it’s 5 or 6 seats). 

 

This means the only way Kevin McCarthy gets the votes he needs to be Speaker is if he bows down to… Marjorie Taylor Greene and Matt Gaetz. Yep, McCarthy is about to hand power over to the most extreme factions of his party.

Yes, this is one of the Members of Congress who will decide the future of the Republican Party over the next few weeks. 

 

So what are we going to do about it? First off, this week we have real work to get done in Congress. The Senate is about to codify marriage equality across the country. We need to pass electoral reform asap. And we absolutely have to keep the government funded. 

 

We also have a historic week ahead of us as Democrats. Tomorrow we’re going to elect a new generation of congressional leadership led by Hakeem Jeffries. It’s a big deal and I’m excited to work alongside him to make sure we’re fighting like hell for our values (and against these idiotic Republican “investigations” on the horizon).

 

So, as McCarthy bends to the extreme parts of his party, we as Democrats will stand up and show what a strong alternative looks like.
