Dear John,

Today is #GivingTuesday, a global generosity movement to unleash the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. This Giving Tuesday I’m asking you to join me in supporting Florida Rising - a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a Florida that we can all believe in.

Today I’m writing you as Congressman-elect, in January I will have the honor of representing my hometown of Orlando as the first member of my generation to serve in Congress.

But far before running for public office, I worked closely with Florida Rising. Together we organized our community to fight for rent stabilization and for an end to systemic gun violence.

When I announced I was running for Congress, more than just a few people counted me out and wrote me off. Establishment folks and organizations told me to “stand down” or “wait my turn.” Florida Rising not only endorsed me when others doubted me, they provided crucial support to help achieve our collective vision for what Florida and the country can be.

I have deep admiration for Florida Rising’s work to defend and uplift the voices of marginalized Floridians. Their work extends far beyond elections, they were on the front lines rallying community to fight:

• GOP attempts to diminish our voting power through redistricting
• The expansion of landfills in our hometowns
• Power monopoly Florida Power & Light increasing rates and profiting off of dirty energy.

While many believe Florida is a “red state”, Florida Rising and I know it is critical we don’t abandon the state and people we love. We see the movement on the ground. I cannot emphasize how important supporting their work is to continuing the momentum we have built.
