Dear Friend,
People in Somalia are experiencing a series of compounding crises, and in the middle of it all, children like three-year-old Sadiya (pictured above) are suffering some of the worst consequences.
When Sadiya arrived in our care back in May, she was running a high fever and vomiting constantly. Her skin had broken out in a rash. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) staff knew right away what it was: a severe case of measles.
Sadiya’s story personifies the cyclic nature of the challenges people in Somalia are facing right now: historic drought has wiped out crops and livestock, leading to malnutrition; ongoing violence has forced thousands of families out of their homes and into overcrowded camps, creating the perfect environment for measles and cholera to spread; malnutrition makes children more vulnerable to these diseases and greatly exacerbates their effects.
Somalia is still in the grips of a historic drought—the worst in 40 years—and is facing another failed rainy season. Crops have dried up, livestock have died or been stolen, and decades-long conflict has forced hundreds of thousands of people—primarily farmers and pastoralists—to flee their homes in search of safety. Many have settled in and around Baidoa city.
In fact, Baidoa now hosts the second-largest number of displaced people in Somalia. The subsequent overcrowding, stoked by catastrophic rates of malnutrition, has given rise to yet another crisis: dual outbreaks of measles and cholera.
We absolutely could not do this work without supporters like you. So on behalf of our patients and staff in more than 70 countries, thank you for caring, Friend. And thank you for giving.
