John, This has been a banner year for Free Speech For People. Our campaign to bar insurrectionists from the ballot under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment has led to two significant, precedent-setting court victories and started a nationwide conversation around the Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause. Our lawsuit on behalf of Mi Familia Vota and individual voters in Texas, arguing that SB1 deliberately disenfranchises voters of color, disabled voters, and voters requiring language assistance, has been allowed to proceed and is scheduled for a July 2023 trial. We continue to challenge foreign-influenced corporate spending and voter intimidation nationwide in an effort to give Americans an equal voice and an equal vote. All of our progress to date is thanks to you. Your support gives us the resources we need to pursue bold legal action and advocacy. But the threats to our democracy remain, and we must be prepared to take our fight into 2023 and beyond. Will you continue to support Free Speech For People in protecting our democracy? As we’re winding down the year, we want to take a moment to tell you about our latest projects: - Earlier this month, we launched the Trump is Disqualified campaign with Mi Familia Vota Education Fund to bar Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, also known as the Insurrectionists Disqualification Clause. Since starting this campaign in June 2021 against insurrectionist elected officials, we have scored significant court victories that create critical precedent for applying this critical constitutional provision to Donald Trump, the insurrectionist-in-chief, as he pursues another run for president in 2024.
- We issued a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice, urging them to prosecute Trump for the multiple counts of obstruction of justice he committed during the Mueller investigation. Many of the instances of obstruction of justice cited in the Mueller report remain actionable, and we are calling on the Department of Justice to file charges against Trump based on the substantial evidence in their possession.
- We filed a legal challenge in Massachusetts against the Attorney General’s decision to reject a proposed ballot measure to ban super PACs in state elections. We argue that the initiative would address quid pro quo corruption and the appearance of corruption created by contributions to super PACs.
