Phew! We made it through November 8, 2022. We know elections are not the beginning or end of our work, they are an indicator of where we are as a country. And this election indicated that we have a highly motivated, multiracial coalition of voters who will show up to the polls and fight for the values we believe in.
We scored major victories in races for Congress, governor, and secretaries of state across the country. Election deniers lost their races. Voters came out in droves to protect abortion access, reproductive freedom, and democracy. And, we scored big policy wins with ballot initiatives across the country. We outperformed expectations and organizers broke GOTV records across the board.
AND (I’m adding caps for the folks in the back of the room) THESE WINS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT LONG-TERM INVESTMENTS IN YEAR ROUND ORGANIZING. These wins are the direct result of what we like to call 365 organizing—organizing year round that doesn’t just put people on doorsteps two weeks to election day. At re:power, we know that electoral politics and movement building are deeply connected. Elections are important, yes, but we have to ensure folks are building power year round so we can connect our electoral wins to year round issue-based organizing.
That brings me to my last point—today is Giving Tuesday and we’re hoping to raise $5,000 by midnight. This money will go directly towards skilling up BIPOC grassroots organizers, policymakers, and candidates so they can organize year round. Will you contribute $50, $100, or $250 today?
Thanks for all that you do,
Karundi Williams
P.S. If you make a gift of $250+ today you’ll be entered to win some cool merch from Patagonia!
