November elections resulted in a House of Representatives with Republicans in the majority. This will mean so much to push back on the unchecked spending that has led to inflation — and bring light to much of the corruption that has led to open borders, unaccountable agencies, and a two-tiered justice system. And while I’m looking forward to Republicans taking the majority in the House in January, I recognize that the status quo will not save America.
Until Republicans take the gavel on January 3rd, much of the buzz around DC will be centered around the race for House Speaker.
For me, the face of who’s Speaker is secondary to the real change that needs to happen. Congress is broken. Our rules — both the House rules and the Republican Conference rules — are structured in a way that gives Leadership a tremendous amount of power over the legislative agenda and prevents Members from providing input. Whoever is voted to be Speaker of the House should be dedicated to taking steps to actually fix the continued dysfunction.
We should not continue to allow important legislation to be passed in a virtually empty House chamber, bills to be brought to the floor without the elected representatives of the people being allowed the time and opportunity to read the bills and offer amendments, or fundraising quotas to dictate who guides the policy we advance.
These and many more are reforms that must be made to enable Congress to better represent the People who elect us. Neither ‘status quo’ leadership, nor simply a new face on the same ol’ dysfunction will give Americans a Congress ready to enact the policies that will restore America’s promise.
During this time, I am intently focused on forcing a conversation on the structural changes we need to make in Congress. Daily I am involved in the collaboration and negotiations surrounding reforming how Congress does business, restoring representative government in Congress, and yes, also who will lead us in these efforts in the next term. Please keep us in prayer during this critical time.
Washington is broken. Our Republic should be a nation of the people, by the people, for the people. To return to those principles, we have to change.
