Mass protests spread across the country over the frustration of these deaths, which many claimed to be avoidable, combined with the ongoing burden of China’s restrictive COVID policy. These strict conditions have led to makeshift barricades and blockaded emergency exits to keep people inside, which many believe prevented the Urumqi residents from receiving help.
