Fellow Conservative,
Today, Congress will vote on the so-called “Respect for Marriage Act” (RFMA) which would codify the Supreme Court’s Obergefell decision, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act which defined marriage as being between one man and one woman.
But what Obergfell does not do is allow a private right of action for citizens to sue religious institutions and individuals for their beliefs in traditional marriage.
RFMA would not affect the state of marriage in America, but it would paint a target on the back of those who sincerely believe that marriage exists only between one man and one woman.
Before the Senate votes on final passage they will have the option to adopt an amendment proposed by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT). This amendment would adequately ensure the protection of religious liberty and requires 60 votes to pass.
