It’s #GivingTuesday: A Chance to Partner with Poynter.
Poynter is your partner in the fight for democracy. You can rely on our thought leadership to support your search for the truth and guide your way. Poynter strives to be a beacon of hope in these ever-changing times.
This newsletter showcases programming we've offered over the last several months that demonstrates our commitment to democracy and fact-based expression. We’ve hosted seminars for media leaders, honored journalism luminaries Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, and helped seniors discern fact from fiction in an interactive program with AARP.
Just as you turn to Poynter, today we turn to you. Giving Tuesday celebrates donating in support of nonprofit organizations within each of our communities. Today we invite you to continue your partnership with Poynter in celebration of journalism and its integral role in democracy.
As you dive into this newsletter, you’ll see Poynter’s commitment to making a difference for journalists and citizens. Will you make a gift supporting Poynter’s mission? Every donation makes a difference.
We will keep shining the light for you. Thank you for your generosity.

Poynter honors the historic careers of Woodward and Bernstein
Poynter President Neil Brown (left) interviews honoree Carl Bernstein at the Bowtie Ball on Nov. 12. (Carrie Pratt for Poynter)
A crowd of more than 500 guests gathered in Tampa on Nov. 12 to celebrate the legendary careers of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein at the Poynter Institute’s Bowtie Ball. During the evening, the guests enjoyed the robust interviews of both honorees — one via video, one in person — by Poynter President Neil Brown. The insightful conversations provided a glimpse into these journalists’ successful careers and their impact not just during Watergate, but throughout the next 50 years.
Additionally, students from Poynter’s Campus Correspondents ([link removed]) program created an on-site video to highlight the importance of journalism in the words of the attendees, which was shared during the program.
The Bowtie Ball is Poynter’s annual fundraising gala, which directly supports our mission. This year, we received a significant outpouring of support, so in appreciation to the many sponsors, donors and attendees whose gifts made this evening a tremendous success, we thank you!
If you weren’t able to attend the Bowtie Ball in person, it’s not too late to honor journalists fighting for democracy everywhere. We invite you to make your Gift From The Heart.

On Oct. 27, Poynter helped prepare a group of Florida residents for the midterms by hosting a luncheon and workshops. MediaWise Director Alex Mahadevan taught participants how to spot false or misleading social media posts, videos and images. PolitiFact managing editor Katie Sanders led a session summarizing potential election issues. The luncheon allowed guests to spend time with Poynter faculty and AARP leadership. The program was presented by Poynter, MediaWise and AARP Florida, with support from Meta. Sessions were recorded to share with residents in other communities.

Diversity Leadership Academy gives leaders confidence

Poynter is proud to offer leadership programs that are innovative, inspiring and transformative. In October, Poynter hosted the Leadership Academy for Diversity in Media ([link removed]) program. The cohort represented newsrooms from the U.S. and abroad, including Spanish-language outlets, public media, nonprofit and digital newsrooms, local newspapers, and startups. Session topics included leading authentically, caring for your team, and recruiting and retaining talent. In September, Poynter hosted the Leadership Academy for Women in Media ([link removed]) . Poynter often receives more requests for scholarship funding for our seminars than what we can provide. If you’d like to help defray the tuition costs for a journalist, we invite you to consider making a contribution to support
scholarships.

Poynter at The Straz
Associated Press Executive Editor Julie Pace speaks as Poynter President Neil Brown looks on during a session in Tampa at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. (Chris Kozlowski/Poynter)
For decades, Poynter has hosted the profession’s best and brightest for community conversations at the Institute. Poynter hit the road to Tampa in October with our first Speaker Series event at the Straz Center for Performing Arts. Our inaugural speaker was senior vice president and executive editor for The Associated Press, Julie Pace. She spoke about her team’s coverage of the war in Ukraine, her tenure as a reporter at The White House and what the AP does to call elections around the country. The evening was moderated by Poynter’s president, Neil Brown. During the program, Brown highlighted the AP’s most iconic photos. It was a powerful evening, recognizing how local news stories become national and international events.

An evening with David McCraw and Kelly McBride
Poynter Senior Vice President, Kelly McBride speaks with David McCraw, vice president and deputy general counsel for The New York Times Company. (Andrew DeLong/Poynter)
Also in October, Poynter hosted a gathering at the residence of Eileen and Craig Newmark for Poynter donors and journalists. Kelly McBride, Poynter’s senior vice president and chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, interviewed David McCraw, vice president and deputy general counsel for The New York Times. This insightful discussion highlighted the tremendous work of the Times and many other media outlets, which constantly defend their work when challenged with lawsuits.
Poynter hosts two events in Washington, D.C.
CNN legal analyst Joan Biskupic speaks to a crowd in Washington, D.C. about what it’s like to cover The Supreme Court as an institution and the justices as individuals. (Andrew DeLong/Poynter)
During a community conversation Sept. 28, Joan Biskupic shared her perspective on what it has been like to cover the Supreme Court of the United States for decades. The conversation, moderated by Neil Brown, included discussions of the leaked draft opinion about abortion and conflicts of interest, including those of justices’ spouses. In addition to serving as a CNN legal analyst, Biskupic is the author of several books about justices past and present, including John Roberts, Sandra Day O’Connor, Antonin Scalia and Sonia Sotomayor. Poynter’s second event, United Facts of America, was live-streamed around the globe and featured discussions from leading voices to provide insight on important issues leading up to the midterm elections. Topics included inflation, climate change, misinformation and more.
