When NAL started our candidate training programs back in 2011, we were taking a bet on the power and potential of New American communities across the country. Slowly, but steadily, we began to see the fruits of our work, seeing our first alum enter state legislature in 2015.

Year after year, we convened BIPOC grassroots leaders in a space tailored just for them, training them in NAL’s campaign playbook, giving them confidence in their leadership ability, and connecting them to other New American trailblazers. In 2018, we launched our C4 affiliate, New American Leaders Action Fund, to help our alumni running for office receive a critical national endorsement and increase their chances of winning election.

Today, NAL proudly counts 37 alum in state legislatures nationally, including the newly-elected Alabas Farhat in Michigan, Erica Mosca in Nevada, and Kristen Gonzalez in New York. There will be nine alum in the Arizona state legislature alone—eight of whom are women. Our alum Yadira Caraveo even won her race to become Colorado’s first Latina representative in Congress!

NAL is our movement’s secret weapon to defend immigrants and expand the frontier for progressive victories. [[link removed]]

Many alum faced significant obstacles while campaigning, including millions of dollars spent on attack ads, incumbents flush with real estate and special interest money, with some alumni being gerrymandered out of their original districts! Yet, it was their authentic leadership and insistence on centering working class immigrants that made the difference.
