Frequently Asked Questions:
Who is the Sierra Club?
Founded in 1892, the Sierra Club is the most enduring and influential grassroots environmental organization in the United States. We amplify the power of our millions of members and supporters to defend everyone’s right to a healthy world.
What threat is our environment facing?
Scientists warn that we’re running out of time to stop runaway climate change. At the same time, we’re witnessing a mass extinction of species. Powerful special interests are fighting against taking any action and even undermining basic protections for our environment.
Why is systemic racism an environmental issue?
Black and brown communities are oftentimes the first ones to feel the impacts of climate change, toxic pollution, and other environmental hazards. When we allow polluters to defile the air, water, and lands of these communities, we’re saying that these places and people are disposable. That their lives don’t count.
How does my gift make an impact?
Your support helps to build a national community of volunteers, advocates and grassroots activists who show up when and where it counts. Sierra Club supporters have the tools and resources to make themselves heard in nearly every district in every state across the country.
How can I trust that this work can achieve lasting change?
Time and again, the Sierra Club has won for the environment. Since our founding, we’ve been instrumental in passing historic environmental laws like the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. Our campaigns helped to secure protections for 439 parks and monuments. Our Beyond Coal campaign has put a record 363 coal-fired power plants on the path to retirement.
Where does the Sierra Club get its funding?
The majority of our funding comes from the generous support from individuals who care about the future of our planet. We’re not beholden to any corporation or government. |
