White House Issues Weak Statement on the Chinese Protests

Daily Wire: The White House released a statement on Monday regarding China’s strict COVID lockdown policies, offering a tepid response following several days of protests across the communist nation. Instead of offering support to back the freedoms of the Chinese people, the Biden administration focused on the difficulty of a “zero COVID” approach. The statement also focused on what the U.S. is doing rather than criticizing China’s government (Daily Wire). Reporter Natasha Bertrand: New White House statement on the protests in China: “We’ve long said everyone has the right to peacefully protest, here in the United States and around the world. This includes in the PRC,” a National Security Council spokesperson says (Twitter).

Biden Taps Congress with Addressing Impending Railroad Strike
Associated Press: President Joe Biden on Monday asked Congress to intervene and block a railroad strike before next month’s deadline in the stalled contract talks, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said lawmakers would take up legislation this week to impose the deal that unions agreed to in September. Pelosi said the House would not change the terms of the September agreement, which would challenge the Senate to approve the House bill without changes (Associated Press). New York Times: Frozen train lines would snap supply chains for commodities like lumber, coal and chemicals and delay deliveries of automobiles and other consumer goods, driving up prices even further (New York Times).

China Struggles to Keep Protest Coverage to a Minimum as Residents Rally Against CCP
CNN: For the first time in decades, thousands of people have defied Chinese authorities to protest at universities and on the streets of major cities, demanding to be freed not only from incessant Covid tests and lockdowns. Across the country, “want freedom” has become a rallying cry for a groundswell of protests mainly led by the younger generation, some too young to have taken part in previous acts of open dissent against the government (CNN). Reporter William Yang: Sources in #Shanghai are now telling me that police are now stopping people and checking their phones to see if there are any apps like Telegram, Instagram, and Twitter that have been used a lot to share updates of the protests with the outside world (Twitter). Hot Air: Obviously, the CCP does not want videos or photos like these spreading online. China has firm control of domestic social media which is why some Chinese citizens are resorting to posting clips on Twitter (Hot Air). Dinesh D’Souza: They are living under a totalitarian regime and yet they are refusing to take orders, in some cases pushing back against the police. But we haven’t seen anything like this since Tiananmen Square. Which was, by the way, 1989. China has been able to keep the lid on for 30 years. And now it looks like things are boiling over again (Daybreak Daily).

Stocks Tumble Amid Chinese Protests
CNBC: Stocks fell Monday as social unrest from China’s prolonged Covid restrictions weighed on markets and pushed down oil prices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 513 points, or 1.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite each shed 1.7%. Over the weekend, demonstrations broke out in mainland China as people vented their frustrations with Beijing’s zero-Covid policy (CNBC). Wall Street Journal: China’s economy is already on delicate footing, and the protests have raised concerns about what direction it takes from here. Strategists and investors say they are contemplating the risk that the protests could result in stronger lockdowns, potentially denting the economy even further (Wall Street Journal).

Senator Cornyn Introduces Bill to Curb Purchasing Microchips from Companies with Ties to the CCP
Washington Examiner: While China may have recently closed the military capability gap, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) has introduced legislative language that could spoil the Chinese Communist Party’s predatory military plans in one fell swoop. Building off the important work of former President Donald Trump , who imposed 25% tariffs on Chinese-made microchips, the senator’s amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) would restrict the U.S. from purchasing microchips from companies that work with the CCP (Washington Examiner). Reuters: Lawmakers also use the bill as a vehicle for a wide range of policy measures. The proposal from Schumer and Cornyn would broaden an existing ban on government use of Chinese chips. The 2023 NDAA authorizes more than $800 billion in spending (Reuters).

Daily Wire: After the players on Iran’s World Cup soccer team expressed solidarity with protesters against the tyrannical Iranian regime by not singing the national anthem before their opening game against England, the Iranian rime is now reportedly threatening to imprison or torture the players’ families if the team refuses to “behave” as the team prepares to face the United States’ team on Tuesday (Daily Wire). CNN: The source, who is closely monitoring Iran’s security agencies operating in Qatar over the World Cup period, said that dozens of officers from the IRGC had been drafted in to monitor the Iranian players who are not allowed to mingle outside the squad or meet with foreigners (CNN).

Oregon Retailer Permanently Closes Up Shop After 15th Break In: “Our city is in peril”
Daily Wire: The owners of a Portland, Oregon, clothing store have closed the shop, blaming “unrelenting criminal behavior” in a note left on the door that also warned the far-left city is “in peril.” Rains PDX has been burglarized 15 times in the last year and a half, its owner, Marcy Landolfo. Damages from the break-ins, looted inventory, and the lawless environment of what may be America’s most liberal city prompted them to give up. Her insurance policy won’t even cover losses at this point, she said (Daily Wire). Reporter Megan Allison: The owner at Rains tells me after five break-ins in about three weeks, she made the sudden decision to permanently close. Staff here are putting pressure on the city to look after small businesses dealing with ongoing challenges with crime (Twitter). KATU: Landolfo said she’s worried about her employees, and no longer sees this location as a feasible business model (KATU).

Balenciaga Apologizes for Recent Child Pornographic Ad Campaigns
Independent: Balenciaga has faced widespread backlash over two recent ad campaigns involving children. One of the ads, the designer’s gift collection campaign, featured children posing with the brand’s teddy bear purses, which critics pointed out appear to be wearing BDSM and bondage-inspired accessories. The second ad under scrutiny is Balenciaga’s Spring 2023 campaign, for its use of a printout of a Supreme Court decision on child pornography (Independent). New York Post: Needless to say, the brand was quick to pull the ads, and now is condemning the controversial campaign, writing: “Our plush bear bags and the gift collection should have not been featured with children” (New York Post). California Found to Be Releasing Pedophiles Same Year They Were Incarcerated
Daily Mail: Pedophiles are getting less than a year prison time after a range of horrific acts, including raping kids under 14. Analysis of a California database of sex offenders shows thousands of child molesters are being let out after just a few months, despite sentencing guidelines. More than 7,000 sex offenders were convicted of ‘lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age’ but were let out of prison the same year they were incarcerated, California Megan’s Law database says (Daily Mail). Post Millennial: California, in recent years, has made its laws against sex offenders much more lax, thanks largely in part to state Senator Scott Weiner. 2020, Wiener authored a bill that would “end discrimination against LGBTQ young people” by providing exemptions from the sex offender registry (Post Millennial).
