STATEMENTS & PRESS RELEASES

Historic Breakthrough on Gun Violence Prevention Funding ([link removed])
(December 16, 2019) "...for the first time in over twenty years -- federal dollars will be used to discover new policies to save American lives. With this vital funding, public health research can help us address our gun violence epidemic. We thank Speaker Pelosi, Congresswoman Lowey, Congresswoman DeLauro, and their staff for their work during this process. The gun violence epidemic and evidence-based solutions to addressing it have become priorities in the House of Representatives, and the passage of this funding continues to illustrate how this issue is continuing to gain traction."

Virginia Grant Funding for Community Violence Intervention Programs ([link removed])
(December 17, 2019) "We would like to thank Governor Northam and Secretary Moran for committing funding to community violence intervention programs. Too often, the communities that are most impacted by gun violence -- frequently communities of color -- are overlooked or ignored in the gun violence prevention debate. Addressing gun violence in these communities is vitally important. We hope that this funding and the new infrastructure is the beginning of a sustained commitment to support strategies and programs that have been proven to save lives. We look forward to working with DCJS and the administration to grow this program and make it successful."

ARTICLES & PRESS

The rhetoric of "Second Amendment sanctuaries" becomes increasingly dangerous, Executive Director Josh Horwitz in the Richmond Times Dispatch ([link removed])
The movement for gun violence prevention is a social movement. We strive to incorporate the principles of social justice, racial equity and the freedom for all Virginians to live their lives without the constant worry of being shot in neighborhoods, by an abuser, in a municipal building, a college classroom or any other everyday place.

New Zealand Starts Gun Buyback Program In Response To Christchurch Mosque Shootings, Stock Daily Dish ([link removed])
Andrew Patrick, media director of The Coalition To Stop Gun Violence, said the nationwide gun buyback plan demonstrates the type of "action and accountability in response to a horrific mass shooting that is unfortunately missing in the United States of America. When it comes to moral and legislative responses to gun violence, American politicians could learn a lot by looking toward this small island in the South Pacific."

Virginia businessman's satire aimed at Westboro church, NRA, The Ottawa Herald ([link removed])
Virginia businessman Justin Beights vowed Thursday to stage a satirical black-tie gala in Topeka to simultaneously throw a harsh spotlight on anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church and to darkly honor with a lifetime achievement award a prominent official of the National Rifle Association. The inaugural Westboro Baptist Church gala would be scheduled April 4 and the dinner-and-music roast of LaPierre would raise money for The LGBT Foundation and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Beights said.

MFOL GU [March For Our Lives, Georgetown University] partnered with other gun control advocacy groups at the rally Monday, including Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

Black Guns Matter founder claims firearms can cut violence, Wellston Journal ([link removed])
Andrew Patrick, a spokesman for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence said they disagreed with some of the principles of Black Gun Matters. He said: 'Our organisation feels the best way to reduce gun violence - especially in cities - is to remove guns from potentially violent situations.'There are many different factors and problems that contribute to violence in America, but guns make violent situations deadly. 'The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence believes in evidence-based approaches to reducing gun violence, including common sense laws that keep guns out of dangerous hands. 'The Black Guns Matter project seems to advocate increasing the number of guns; data shows this tactic actually escalates the risk of violence.

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS
