Hithere, my name is Emma Broyles, and in 2022, I was named Miss America.

But long before I donned the crown and sash, I had the honor and privilege of being a part of the Special Olympics community. 

My older brother Brendan has Down syndrome. Through him, I’ve seen firsthand the joy that Special Olympics can bring — and I want that for EVERY person with intellectual disabilities (ID).

I was very young when Brendan first joined Special Olympics Alaska, but even as a child, I could see the difference in him when he started participating. He had more friends, laughed and smiled more, and was healthier and happier than ever before. It filled me with joy to see how being a part of Special Olympics transformed his life. 

Becoming Miss America is an incredible honor. I’ve been able to travel the world and meet so many amazing people — just a few days ago I even got to be a part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (a dream come true!). 

But simply being Miss America is not enough for me. I want to use my platform to talk about the power of inclusion to help build more welcoming and empathetic communities. And I want to fight for people like Brendan to have a place to feel supported and loved.
