The Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population’s most recent situation report counts 11,889 suspected cases, 10,200 hospitalizations, and 223 known fatalities so far. 

The most affected age group is still children younger than five years old. One reason this disease is currently so dangerous to children is that roughly 1 in 5 children in Haiti is chronically malnourished. Malnutrition weakens a child’s immune system, meaning the smallest, most vulnerable children are left least defended.

Cholera causes such severe vomiting and diarrhea that—if left untreated—a patient can die from dehydration within 24 hours.

The last time cholera spread in Haiti, the Zanmi Lasante team proved to the world that cholera vaccination could save lives even in the most impoverished places. This led to the creation of a global cholera vaccine stockpile.
