Republicans are poised to take control of the House of Representatives with only a very narrow majority — which means the far-right clown car side of their caucus is going to be leading the way.
Kevin McCarthy, the frontrunner to become Speaker, is following their lead by baselessly attacking my sister and fellow Justice Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar. From the moment she was elected, the GOP has made her a target because she's an outspoken, Black, progressive, muslim Representative. They've targeted her with attack ads and on the House Floor. And now, McCarthy has threatened to strip Ilhan of her committee assignments.
This comes from a party that downplays or ignores members like Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, and their leader Donald Trump when they pal around with notorious anti-semites like white nationalist Nick Fuentes and even endorse political violence. They're singling out a progressive woman of color for hatred from their radical base — and we have to stand up to them.
Islamophobia, xenophobia, racism, sexism, and fear should have no place in the House of Representatives. Together with Ilhan we're working toward addressing the issues our communities face, whether that's inflation, healthcare, or solving the climate crisis.
Just this month, I was proud to work alongside Ilhan to call for loss and damage funding to countries that contributed the least to the climate crisis but are being impacted the most. That's the kind of leadership we need to keep in the House of Representatives, and with your help, we won't back down.
