War is a Racket. Don't Miss the Latest Animated Video.

The alliance between "throne and altar" runs throughout Murray Rothbard's historical works. Rothbard recognized, the American empire is propped up by special interests that promote the righteousness of US conflicts at home in order to enjoy the spoils of military conquest beyond our shores.

In "War Is a Racket," the newest episode of America: From Republic to Empire, we meet decorated marine-turned-anti-war activist Smedley Butler. At one point, Butler was among the most celebrated members of the American military, having served loyally in Cuba, South America, and Asia. Over time, however, Butler came to realize that his service was less about protecting Americans at home and more about serving corporate interests abroad.

This alliance between "throne and altar" or the American war machine and big business led Butler to write his famous short book War is a Racket, which remains today one of the most important anti-war books ever penned.
