As we approach nine months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United States remains a strong supporter of the Ukrainian struggle against Russia’s war of aggression. We have provided humanitarian, financial and military aid to help Ukraine defend itself from Russian troops and airstrikes.
Yet there are ways we can help to de-escalate the war while preserving a free and independent Ukraine and reducing the threat of nuclear conflict. It starts with engaging in diplomatic talks with Russia and Ukraine.
Diplomatic discussions with Russia are neither out of reach nor out of the question. France and Germany have talked with Vladimir Putin throughout the war. The United States has been negotiating with the Russian government for months to secure freedom for WNBA star Brittney Griner.
The path forward is clear: we must be prepared to pursue diplomacy while remaining steadfast that any solution must be acceptable to the Ukrainian people.
