Dear John,
The results are in! House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi [ [link removed] ] (D-Calif.) is the "winner" of CAGW's online poll for 2017 Porker of the Year. Rep. Pelosi garnered 54 percent of the vote, trouncing her closest rival by a better than 2-to-1 margin.
[ [link removed] ]Rep. Pelosi earned this dubious award for her long history of making false and misleading statements about the "benefits" of Obamacare. During a CNN town hall on January 31, 2017, she made a startling claim about the Affordable Care Act: "Its three purposes were to increase coverage, expand those who got healthcare; to improve benefits; and to lower costs, and it has succeeded in every way."
All three aspects of that statement have been proven false.
A January 2017 Congressional Budget Office projection found that Obamacare covers less than half of the original estimate of 30 million people, while many Obamacare enrollees who received new private health insurance are finding that their high-deductible plans leave them just as vulnerable when they become ill.
Skyrocketing costs have caused insurers to either drastically increase premiums or withdraw from the Obamacare exchanges altogether. Premium increases in 2018 will make coverage "unaffordable," by the law's own definition, for 54 percent of families who bought their health insurance during the 2017 open enrollment period. The cost of the most popular Obamacare plan is set to rise by 34 percent in 2018, and 70 percent of U.S. counties only offer one or two health insurance choices.
CAGW's 2017 Porker of the Year silver medal winner with 21 percent of the vote is Sen. Bernie Sanders [ [link removed] ] (I-Vt.). Sen. Sanders was named the June 2017 Porker of the Month for his long, misguided quest to impose an expensive, government-run healthcare system on Americans.
The other 2017 Porker of the Year nominees, in order of votes received, were: Rep. Tom Rooney [ [link removed] ] (R-Fla.) (12 percent); Sen. Al Franken [ [link removed] ] (D-Minn.) (4 percent); Rep. Don Young [ [link removed] ] (R-Alaska) (4 percent); and Sen. Ron Wyden [ [link removed] ] (D-Ore.) (4 percent).
Our thanks to the many CAGW members and supporters who took the time to participate in this poll. We appreciate your support!
Sincerely,
Thomas A. Schatz, President
