reached an all-time high. The war in Ukraine, rising food insecurity,
threats of famine, devastating floods and storms are among the driving
forces.

Mercy Corps is working right now to ensure families and
communities in 40+ countries have the resources they need to cope, adapt,
and thrive.

In Ukraine, Mercy Corps was on the ground within days of the start of the
war to help ensure families fleeing the violence had the lifesaving
support they needed.

For people like Elianova, that meant she was able to find safety after a
harrowing journey. At first, she sheltered in her basement with her
family. With no water, they collected snow to melt. They walked to the
city center to buy groceries and waited in line as armored vehicles drove
by pointing weapons at them. When they felt it was safe, they escaped and
crossed the border into Warsaw where they are staying at a Mercy Corps
supported shelter.

When they fled, she had to leave her cello behind. She’s been playing the
cello her whole life and attended a special music school for gifted
individuals in Ukraine. After arriving in Poland, someone at the shelter
lent her a cello. She says playing is emotionally difficult, but necessary
to help her through the sadness.

Alla and her two children fled from Mariupol when bombing began in their
neighborhood. They ran by foot until they could find an evacuation convoy
to take them to a safe area. Their journey to safety took 10 days. Now in
a Mercy Corps supported shelter, she says their family has found peace.

"We rested, changed clothes, and were able to drink water and not
hoard it. The children finally ate as much as they wanted. Here we
  have a place where we can sleep and we are not stressed anymore."
