We’re animal people.

After we got married, we wanted to direct our philanthropic dollars to animal causes. We were looking at local animal shelters, where we could support better conditions for cats and dogs waiting for adoption. But Adam, an investment professional, had worked in agricultural commodities, so we also knew about factory farming—the much larger, hidden, industrial side of animal welfare.

We wanted to do as much good as we could, so we did our research. What strategy would have the greatest impact for animals, and which charity would allow us to make that kind of investment?

We kept coming back to The Humane League. Their strategy of minimizing animal suffering on a large scale—by tackling key welfare issues at the corporate level—was clearly working: millions of egg-laying hens were being freed from tiny cages. The cage-free movement, largely driven by The Humane League and its supporters, was taking off.
