Welcome to our weekly newsletter about mental health services and support available in Barnet and beyond. Also bringing you updates on Inclusion Barnet mental health news. Produced by Ed Peston, Communications Assistant.

Inclusion Barnet Events and News Inclusion Barnet AGM 2022

This is a great opportunity to come and meet some of our staff and Trustees. Two of our staff will also be doing short presentations on the work they’ve been doing around Benefits advice and Healthy Heart support in the Carribean, African and South Asian communities in Barnet.

If you can’t make it to our office, you can still join the meeting via Zoom, though I am afraid we won’t be able to post you a mince pie!

Job vacancy – Head of Peer Services (peer role)

Part-time: 28 hrs per week, contract until 31st March 2025, extendable subject to funding

Location: NW9, London (Hybrid)

Salary: £43,000 per year pro rata, actual salary £34,400

Closing date: 1 December 2022, 23:59

This is an amazing opportunity for someone with lived experience of disability (which could include experience of mental health issues or a long-term condition) to lead on our Peer Services function. This is really varied and interesting role, where time will be split between supporting our service manager, developing and delivering training, advising on co-production, and leading practitioner meetings around related topics, including safeguarding.

Events and News from the Web Mental Health in the Workplace – Understanding the Impact of Trauma (From Breathe UK), Wednesday 30 November, 10.00 - 11.00am

The last two years have been challenging, as we’ve faced Covid, the cost of living crisis, racial violence, political upheaval, environmental disasters, war, and more.

There are many ways that trauma, adversity and distress show up in people’s lives. Acknowledging what somebody is experiencing helps to better support them and find solutions together to move forward.

Here’s what you can learn

• The importance of a psychosocially healthy culture and good relationships in the workplace

• What does being a trauma-informed organisation mean and why is this important

• Recognising the effect of traumatic experiences on mental health and how often people's thoughts behaviours and feelings can be understandable coping strategies for dealing with what life throws at us

How to prioritise self-care when working in music (From Help Musicians), Monday 28 November, 11.00am - 12.00pm and fortnightly after that.

While a career in music can be fun and rewarding, it can also create difficult conditions in which to look after your mental wellbeing. Long periods spent away from home, lifestyle factors, irregular work, financial difficulties, isolating work conditions, and lack of routine all have the potential to exacerbate any struggles you may already be experiencing. These situations can have a very real impact on your ability to fully engage with and to enjoy what you do. Developing coping strategies to overcome these difficult moments will help you keep alive your love for your profession, allowing you to enjoy more fully the amazing parts of working in music and make the most of your career in the long term.

Singing For Mindfulness and Mental Wellbeing (From Crawley Mindfulness Centre), Wednesdays 6.00 - 7.00pm

An hour of singing for the soul. Victoria will share with you some short, simple but deeply nourishing or uplifting songs that will go in easily, no matter what your experience. Insight into Creative Psychotherapy (Expressing Emotions Creatively) (From Crawley Mindfulness Centre), Monday 28 November, 6.00 - 7.00pm

Addictive Eaters Anonymous online meetings, Thursdays 6.30 - 7.30am and Fridays 7.00 - 8.00pm

Addictive Eaters Anonymous (AEA) is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from addictive eating.

AEA has members who have suffered from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Many have been underweight, overweight or obese; others were people of average weight yet suffered with an obsession with food. Members may have used exercise and other substances to try and control their weight. Before coming to AEA, members found that they were powerless over food, and unable to stop the food obsession.

Working minds - Supporting employers to promote good mental health

Last year more than 17.9 million working days were lost as a result of stress, anxiety, or depression. While the full impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is yet to be fully understood, work-related stress is the number one reason given for sick days in the UK.

The Health and Safety Executive is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety. Their campaign "Working Minds" campaign aims to help businesses recognise the signs of work-related stress and make tackling issues routine.

Nearly all of our directors and staff have lived experience of disability, including mental health issues and/or long-term health conditions.

We believe that learning to use our lived experience for social change is a skill. We have become experts in harnessing the lived experience of our staff, members, volunteers and the people who use our services to design and deliver higher quality, more person-centred services.
