Friend,
Julián Castro is a powerfully important voice for our country.
As a presidential candidate, he proposed bold and progressive policies — including reforming our immigration laws, fixing our broken criminal justice system, improving access to child care, and protecting the rights and equality of people with disabilities.
He’s made the Democratic primary more substantive, and his vision was always clear: Lift up the voices of the people who are struggling the most, and fight for deep, systemic reform.
I’m deeply grateful to receive his endorsement today. It is an honor to fight side by side with Julián Castro for the big, structural change we need.
And I’d be honored if you’d join our fight, too. Together, we can continue to lift up the voices of people who are too often unheard. We can dream big, fight hard, and win — but only if we link arms and fight shoulder to shoulder.
Julián and I both had the honor to serve in President Obama’s administration, where we had the opportunity to work on a number of issues that touch people’s lives.
And we both have succeeded because we got a shot at the American Dream.
I grew up on the ragged edge of the middle class in Oklahoma. When I was 12 years old, my daddy had a heart attack and was out of work for a long time. We lost our family station wagon, and we were inches away from losing our home. One day, my mother pulled on her best dress, walked down the street and got her first paying job outside the home: answering the phones at Sears. That minimum wage job saved our home and it saved our family.
My life had a lot of twists and turns along the way, but I went on to attend public college for $50 a semester, graduate from law school, and become a teacher, a professor, and a US Senator — because America invested in me.
Now, Julián and I are fighting side by side to ensure that families in our country today can have the same opportunity to achieve their dreams as ours did.
I admired the campaign that Julián Castro ran, and I’ll continue to fight for our vision of justice and opportunity — where everyone gets the chance to succeed and thrive.
I paid close attention to the big ideas he was adding to the race (I always appreciate when someone has a plan), and I was always glad to run into him on the trail, from debate stages to the Iowa Steak Fry.
Tomorrow, we’ll come together again and speak at an event in New York City.
We’ll talk about putting political and economic power in the hands of the people, where it belongs.
And we’ll continue to fight to make it happen — but we can’t do it alone.
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
