41 States Will be Ignored in 2024

Because of the state-by-state winner-take-all method of awarding electoral votes, 41 states and the District of Columbia are already in the bag for either the 2024 Republican or Democratic presidential nominee.

The Republican nominee can count on 218 electoral votes from 24 states (red on the map).

The Democratic nominee can count on 211 electoral votes from 17 states and DC (blue on the map).

The 2024 campaign will be concentrated in 9 states (yellow on the map). The nine states (and one competitive congressional district in Maine and Nebraska) have a total of 109 electoral votes. A total of 270 electoral votes are needed to win the Presidency.

Presidential candidate only campaign in closely divided states where they have something to gain or lose. In practice, this means that the candidates are separated by no more than eight percentage points. Because Iowa, Ohio, and Florida are no longer in this competitive range, the number of spectator states will reach a high of 41 in 2024 .

THE NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE BILL

The National Popular Vote bill has already been enacted into law in 15 states and DC possessing 195 electoral votes. When our legislation is adopted by states with an additional 75 electoral votes, it will

guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who gets the most votes in all 50 states and DC,
apply the one-person-one-vote principle to presidential elections,
give candidates a reason to campaign in all 50 states so that every voter, in every state, will be politically relevant in every presidential election,
increase voter turnout, and
help ensure the peaceful transfer of power in presidential elections.

In 2023, the National Popular Vote organization will continue working in state legislatures across the country to change the system of electing the President.
